Searching for a Medical Transcription Position?


The first thing to look for when finding out about a medical transcription position is the medical transcriptionist job description.

Consideration needs to be given as to whether the position will suit your character and fit with your circumstances.

For example, there is no point in you starting a business working from home if you are the type of person who likes to be interacting with people all day.

Does dictation medical transcription appeal to you?

Or, would you prefer more of a medical transcription editor job?

What level do you think you may like to work at?

Once you can answer these questions you will want to sort out some training. It is a great idea to obtain a medical transcription diploma, although it is not essential.

You need to determine who is offering medical transcription employment.

When you choose a training school check them out first. They often have relationships with employers and some good schools have organizations offering positions to students as soon as they graduate.

Look in your local newspaper in the classified section, although more and more medical transcription positions are being offered online.

Medical transcription jobs are available in the hospital setting, physician’s office, medical clinic, nursing home, research center, insurance company, medical publishing company or medical transcription service.

You will find medical transcription companies offer work-at-home opportunities and may also provide equipment and a delivery service. You will need a medical reference library if you work at home to ensure concise, accurate transcripts.

Some medical transcription positions are full time, some are part time and some are freelance at home or for private clients. There are day shift positions, night shift positions and you can work weekend rostered hours using shift rotations.

There are contracted medical transcription jobs and jobs as an employee for either a medical institution or a medical transcription service company.

Three distinct medical transcriptionist professional levels have been identified.


Professional Level One

This is a medical transcriptionist who transcribes dictation by doctors and other healthcare providers in order to document patient care. The transcriptionist will likely need assistance to interpret dictation that is unclear or inconsistent, or make use of professional reference materials.

Their work involves assignments matched to her or his developing skill level yet designed to stretch their depth and/or breadth or exposure Or more repetitive work, not requiring development of skills.

The sorts of positions at this level are positions such as part time medical transcription, medical transcription dictation, medical transcription typing jobs, and standard medical transcriptionist positions.


Professional Level Two

This refers to a medical transcriptionist who transcribes and interprets dictation by doctors and other health care providers in order to document patient care. This medical transcription position is routinely involved in research of questions and in the education of others involved with patient care documentation.

Work is given that requires some depth of knowledge in a specialized area or the transcriptionist is given assignments that vary in report or correspondence type, originator and specialty. The incumbent will be able to resolve non-routine problems independently or assist resolving complex or highly unusual problems.

The sort of positions that this level covers are medical transcription supervisor, medical transcription editor, clinic medical transcription jobs and contracted medical transcriptionist will need to be at this level.


Professional Level Three

This level of medical transcriptionist has depth and breadth of professional experience enabling her or him to serve as a medical language resource to originators, co-workers, other healthcare providers, and/or students on a regular basis.

They work in a position routinely researching and resolving complex questions related to health information or related documentation

And/Or are involved in formal teaching of those either entering the profession or continuing their education in medical transcription

And/Or regularly using extensive experience to interpret dictation that others are unable to clarify. Rarely performs actual transcription of dictation as usually focusing on other categories or work.

Teaching medical transcription may be what would appeals to you as you like to help people, then you will be looking to work in professional level two or three positions.

The natural progression from a medical transcription position at level two or three is to medical transcription management, or having your own medical transcription business.
